Test What Matters: The Benefits of Modular English Testing

Are you using an English test that assesses every skill when you only need to measure one? Envoy’s modular design gives teachers and institutions the flexibility to assess only the skills they need, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

What is modular English testing and how does it work?

Envoy by IDP Education is a four-skills English language proficiency test that can be broken down into individual modules that target different skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Unlike traditional fixed-format tests, Envoy allows you to select or de-select particular skill modules as needed when you run the test. Within some skills, you also have the flexibility to choose which tasks you want to include. For example, if you want your students to write an email but not an essay, you can adjust the settings in the admin dashboard.

Each skill receives its own score, providing you with a clear picture of student performance across different areas. If you choose to administer the full test, each student will receive both individual and overall scores, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

How Envoy offers greater flexibility for different teaching and assessment needs

Schools, universities and English language providers need different types of assessments at different stages of the learning journey.

An English placement test for new students, for example, serves a different purpose from an end-of-course assessment and usually requires different insights.

Envoy's modular design gives teachers the flexibility to assess only the skills that are most relevant to their students and learning outcomes, rather than conducting a full test every time.

For instance, you might choose to measure a class's progress in a specific skill after completing a unit of study or assess an individual learner's development following targeted support in a particular area.

A more cost-effective approach to English assessment

Envoy’s flexible format means you only pay for the sections you need. There is no obligation to administer a full four-skills assessment when you only need to measure one or two skills.

There are multiple licence options available, including:

  • Envoy four skills

  • Envoy Listening and Reading

  • Envoy Speaking

  • Envoy Writing

Each licence also includes a Multiple Choice Question diagnostic section at the beginning, which assesses grammar, vocabulary and cohesion knowledge.

The licence options offer good value for institutions that need to conduct regular progress checks or targeted diagnostic assessments, without the cost associated with full proficiency testing for every student.

Shorter test times for students and teachers

Another benefit of modular testing is that it reduces overall assessment time. While Envoy’s complete four-skills assessment takes around 90 minutes, students can complete a single-skill assessment in as little as 20 minutes.

Envoy combines AI marking with rigorous quality assurance to provide fast, reliable results with CEFR alignment, usually within two hours. Tests flagged for score inconsistencies or integrity concerns undergo review by a human rater within 24 hours, so you can be confident that all results are an accurate reflection of your students' skills.

Less testing and marking time mean less disruption to teaching schedules, allowing students to spend more time learning the skills they need.

Test what matters, when it matters

Envoy’s flexible design allows you to assess the right skills at the right time instead of using the same testing approach for every situation.

By focusing only on the skills that you need to assess, Envoy helps save time and lower costs while providing the insights you need to make informed decisions throughout your programs.
